What our code is not clear on is how close does it need to be to the mechanical protection such as a running board before it is not mechanically protected any longer.

Drill holes with a diameter of no more than one third the depth of the joist staying 2 in.
Although not technically an electrical question it does pertain to electrical installation more than any other forum so i will go ahead and post this here.
Where and how to drill joists for electrical cables or plumbing runs depends on what type of floor framing you have.
Running wire through floor joists.
Away from the top and bottom.
Electrical staples are approximately 1 2 inch wide and can be attached with a hammer to hold the wire in place beneath the joists.
Appears to be a bit of a judgement call.
The best way to install an electrical staple is to put the prongs.
I remember reading somewhere concerning rules about drilling though floor joists but i can t find it anymore.
Keep the hole at least 2 in.
